How to Wash & Care
for a Throw Blanket
(Without Ruining It)
A gentle guide to making your favorite throw last — whether it's cashmere, wool, faux fur, or something far softer.
There is a particular heartbreak that comes from pulling your favorite throw out of the dryer to find it stiff, shrunken, or inexplicably covered in pills. A beautiful blanket, once plush, now reduced to something you'd hide behind the sofa. The good news: almost every throw-blanket disaster is completely preventable — if you know the rules.
At Kashwére, we've been weaving luxury throws for five-star hotels and spa destinations since 1999. Over the years, we've learned exactly what makes a throw last — and exactly what doesn't. This is the guide we wish every throw blanket came with.
Five golden rules for every throw
- Rule OneAlways wash in cold water. Heat is the single greatest threat to fiber integrity, and cold water preserves color, softness, and shape.
- Rule TwoChoose the gentle or delicate cycle. Aggressive agitation causes the friction that leads to pilling and loss of loft.
- Rule ThreeTumble dry on low heat. High heat shrinks, stiffens, and breaks down fibers — low heat keeps them plush.
- Rule FourSkip the bleach, and skip the iron. Chlorine destroys color and fiber structure; heat from an iron flattens texture permanently.
- Rule FiveWash with like colors, and never overload the machine. Throws need room to move freely to emerge soft, not matted.
That covers the general principles. But not all throws are cut from the same cloth — literally. The right care depends on what your blanket is actually made of, and this is where a lot of people go wrong. Let's break it down by material.
Because cashmere and chenille
are not the same conversation.
Every fiber has its own temperament. Here's how to care for the four most common throw blanket materials — and why some are significantly more forgiving than others.
The Kashwére Chenilla Classic™ Throw
Our signature Chenilla Classic™ yarn was engineered with one philosophy: luxury shouldn't be high-maintenance. Unlike cashmere or wool, it's built to go straight from your sofa to your washing machine to your dryer without ceremony.
- Machine wash cold on the gentle cycle with like colors.
- Tumble dry on low to medium heat until fully dry.
- No bleach, no iron, no dry cleaner. Ever.
It really is that simple. The Chenilla Classic™ yarn is specifically designed not to pill or shrink under normal laundering, and every wash restores the original plushness rather than wearing it down. Love it, wash it, repeat.
Faux Fur Throws
Faux fur looks dramatic and feels wonderful, but the pile is delicate. Heat is the enemy — it melts synthetic fibers and causes permanent matting that no amount of brushing will fix.
- Turn the throw inside out before washing to protect the pile.
- Wash cold on the gentle or delicate cycle with mild detergent.
- Air dry when possible, or tumble on the lowest heat setting with no dryer sheets.
- Shake vigorously once dry to restore loft, then brush gently with a wide-tooth comb if needed.
Wool Throw Blankets
Wool is a beautiful natural fiber, but it shrinks the moment it meets warm water or a standard wash cycle. Once wool felts, there's no undoing it — what was a throw is now a doormat.
- Hand wash in cool water with a wool-specific detergent, or use the wool cycle if your machine has one.
- Never wring or twist. Press water out gently with towels.
- Lay flat to dry — away from direct sunlight and never in a dryer.
If you love the look of wool but want something you can actually live with, this is where our Chenilla yarn quietly outperforms. Same visual warmth, none of the fuss.
Cashmere Throw Blankets
True cashmere is exquisite — and almost universally dry-clean only. That means every wash is a trip to the cleaners, a bill, and a day or two without your blanket. For something you drape over your lap nightly, that's a real cost over a lifetime of use.
- Follow the care label. Most cashmere throws require professional dry cleaning.
- If hand-washable, use cold water and cashmere-specific detergent, lay flat to dry.
- Store folded, never hung — hanging stretches the fibers.
This is where Kashwére was born, honestly. Our founder wanted the feel of cashmere without the care instructions of cashmere. Chenilla Classic™ delivers the same cloud-soft hand feel and elevated look, but washes like a cotton t-shirt.

When things go sideways
What causes pilling?
Two things: low-quality yarn that breaks and tangles on itself, and high-heat washing or drying that accelerates fiber breakdown. Our Chenilla Classic™ yarn is engineered specifically to resist this — the twist and density of the fiber prevents the surface fuzz that turns into pills on lesser blankets.
What causes shrinkage?
High heat, nearly every time. Hot water relaxes fibers and a hot dryer locks them in a smaller, denser configuration. The fix is simple: cold wash, low-heat dry. Follow those two rules and you'll never watch a queen-sized blanket come out twin-sized.
My throw feels stiff. Can I restore it?
Yes — and it's easier than you'd think. Toss the throw in the dryer on low heat for about 15 minutes with two clean dryer balls (or tennis balls in a pillowcase). The tumbling motion restores loft and softness to compressed fibers. For Kashwére throws specifically, this works beautifully every time.
How often should I wash a throw blanket?
For a throw in daily use, every two to four weeks is a good rhythm. More often if pets or kids are regular companions. Regular washing actually keeps a Kashwére throw plush — the agitation helps maintain the loft of the yarn rather than degrading it.
Buy it once.
Love it forever.
The best throw blanket isn't the one you baby — it's the one you actually use. The one that comes with you to the couch, the guest room, the airport, the cold car ride home. The one that goes through the wash with the rest of the laundry and comes out just as soft as the day you unwrapped it.
That's what we set out to make twenty-five years ago, and it's what every Kashwére throw still delivers today. Livable luxury, on purpose.
